How to Start Jogging

One of the most popular DIY fitness ideas is to start jogging. A popular time of year for people to decide to make radical changes in their life is the New Year. This is the time when many smokers decide to quit, and lots of people resolve to lose weight and get fit.  Starting to jog in the New Year can give you some extra impetus, but at any time of year jogging makes a lot of sense - it’s free and you can do it anywhere. All you need to do is open your front door, put on some running shoes and off you go!

Not quite, but almost.  Before you start jogging, it’s important to make an appointment for a check-up with your doctor. You’ll only need a quick examination to see if jogging’s a suitable sport for you, and if it’s not, then your doctor will be able to advise on alternatives.

Next make sure you’re eating a healthy, balanced diet. There’s no point in going jogging if you don’t eat enough foods that will give you energy. Don’t fill up on highly processed foods, or those that contain a lot of sugar or fat.  Choose instead to eat fresh, whole foods. Buy healthy ingredients and cook some simple healthy recipes rather than pre-cooked meals.   Drink plenty of water so that there’s no danger of you dehydrating once you start building up the jogging.

Finally, get the right gear.  It's important to have a good pair of running shoes, and it’s best to get some expert advice here.  You also need to wear comfortable clothing. In the winter, it’s important to have some base layers to keep your skin dry as you jog.  Wearing thermal gloves will also make jogging a lot easier to cope with on those cold, frosty mornings.

Once you’re prepared, start small. It’s not realistic to think you can achieve five miles on your first day.  Instead, build your jogs up gradually. You might even want to start by hiking the route you’ve chosen the first few times, and then start jogging on the fourth or fifth outing. Remember to warm up your muscles before a jog and to stretch out afterwards. If jogging really grabs you, you might want to ask a friend or your partner to join you, so you have company along the way.
